Research into holograms

In our film we have truly embraced the world of the sci-fi genre and have started to look into the idea of holograms and where we would want to place them in the world and what would there uses be.

The first film that came to mind about holograms is Star Wars. Since my childhood I have loved Star Wars so I looked up some videos of scenes where they used holograms. While watching the scenes, they have almost kept the holograms towards the time period it was created in, which makes it quite unique.

The next film that came to me was the famous scene in Back To The Future II where there is a massive Jaws 19 movie advertisement film that has a hologram shark coming out and pretends to eat people. The thought behind the hologram idea and what it does and how it is designed is very unique.

Another film I could think of that has hologram technology was in the Marvel films Iron Man where Tony Stark creates things with holograms. It is very playful and really innovative and incredibly detailed with the objects that he is controlling.

I then started to look into sci-fi films that I have heard of but have not yet watched. A film that I found while searching was called The Giver. There is a scene in this film where two of the characters are watching a hologram of two people playing on the piano. What really got my attention was that it was a mixture of the detail of Iron Mans hologram and the flicking-ness of the Star Wars hologram which I really liked.

Finally the next film I found was Her where the main character is talking to AI while playing a hologram game and swipes to open up pictures from a device to see them hologram. I felt this was a great example and seeing how they have used holograms as a game for the main character and to get things from his phone and with a swipe of a hand upwards it is there in front of him.

I have really enjoyed looking into different types of holograms in films and seeing the different animations and styles to holograms where some had a flicker and a 1970’s feel while others are smooth clear and very crisp.

When watching Star Wars, Back to the Future II and Her I did notice that there was always a point of origin of the holograms i.e. light source for the holograms to come to life, so maybe something to think about and possibly think if we want a light source which may come from the drone that would be projecting the hologram to Sici.

Glitching and hacking animations/title sequences research

With both of my previous versions of my end credit titles been shot down and having to change it yet again and listening to what my director wants as the end credit titles as a sort of glitching of the screen. I decided to research scenes that show glitching to screens or a type of hacking typefaces changing to the people’s names to be credited.

The glitch effect can be described as a sudden or temporary malfunction in equipment making it unusable for a brief time. We witness these glitch effects and sudden distortion to the screen.

The first kind of screen glitching I came across was the really awesome TV series ‘Halt and Catch Fire’ title sequence.

I really like the how they have many shades of red and all kind of blocky but you can easily through it to see outlines of the actors faces. Not the kind of glitching effect I am looking for but something to keep in mind and looks really awesome.

The next glitching effect I came across was ‘Humans’,

Where their glitching effects are very subtle and not very noticeable which I really like as it is not trying to draw too much attention to the glitches but they are subtly there and have to notice them. This in turn is almost telling you about the TV show that the robots in them are not perfect and have glitches in them.

What I most like about how Humans has used the glitch effect is that it is really subtle and it’s only on for a split second. It only distorts the footage briefly but it is a really nice effect and its not trying to draw too much attention to it.

The next glitch effect that I came across was another television programme’s title sequence called ‘Person of Interest’

The glitch effect in this is much more noticeable and lasts almost the same time as the glitch effect in Humans.

Personally it much more to a modern time glitching as you have almost a TV screen glitch and that it has elements of the TV colour bar screen.

Personally again I like how subtle it is as its only on for a brief second but in away it’s a bit too glitchy personally as its using very bright and contrasting colours and almost a TV screen glitch.

The last kind of glitching effect I came across was a title sequence that someone made for the game called ‘Watch Dogs’

Personally, I don’t really like how its just zig zag lines in these examples :

It does not really do much and looks a bit faked which I don’t really like that much. However, at the end I do like how they created the logo and that glitches much differently to the zig zaggy lines.

Overall, I am thinking towards the idea of having the glitch effect but glitching over hacker text and that it unveils the name of the person and their role for the film.
